In English

To whom belongs this ruined camp in the valley of sand, Whose traces the north wind has swept away? I stood there, and tears from my eyelids Overflowed upon its deserted hollows. I ask about the maiden of Banu Qurad, And about her peers, those of radiant beauty. But how can a faded trace answer me— Distant, unresponsive to my plea?

When the crow cawed there, it grieved me so, And made my tears flow like scattered pearls. It told me of manifold calamities, And of abandonment after tender union. O crow of separation, why every day Do you oppose me, when you've filled my mind? As if I had slaughtered with my sword's edge Your chicks, or snared you with hunting ropes?

By your father's right, heal my heart's wound, And cool the fire of my secret with words. Tell me where Abla has settled, And what the hands of nights have done to her. For my heart is wandering in every land, Kissing the tracks of camels' hooves; And my body is cast in the sand dunes, A phantom longing for a phantom's trace.

And in the valley, on the branches, a bird Wails, its lament rising high in the air. So I said to it when it showed its grief: "Leave complaint—your state is not like mine. My tears overflow, while you weep Without tears—that is the weeping of the dry."

May God curse separation, and show it no mercy! For how often has my heart been pierced by arrows? I fight every stubborn tyrant, Yet separation kills me without a single blow.
