One of the most interesting things about Portugal is how little its borders have changed over the centuries.
While much of Europe spent generations redrawing maps, Portugal had already established most of its present-day borders by 1297, making them among the oldest in the world.
It's particularly remarkable considering its position beside a much larger neighbour, whose own political geography would continue evolving for centuries.
Perhaps there's something to be said for knowing exactly who you are, without needing quite so much space to prove it.
