If you've ever wondered what the Dutch do on an average day. This is the article for you. Here, I discuss various rituals and ceremonies performed by virtually all Dutch.
The Awakening
The Dutch morning starts bright and early. Many Dutch get out of bed around 06.00, an take a shower. Despite popular belief, the Dutch do actually take great pride in their hygiene.
After a good, hot shower, it's time for our very first, true ritual; breakfast
Hagelslag
If you've ever had the honour of partaking in a Dutch breakfast, you will surely have been force-fed hagelslag. This delicacy is a must-have on every Dutch breakfast table. That, and a block of cheese. The Dutchman will take a slice of bread, masterfully cover it with butter (or margarine), and shower it with that chocolatey goodness. If done properly, the slice can be held upside-down without spilling any of the hagelslag.
Work
The Dutch have a long history of loving money. Even I am hoping to part my readers from their hard earned BTC in my favour. The working day typically starts anywhere between 07.30 - 09.00. At work, many of us spend a significant amount of time in intercollegiate consultation (coffee machine gossip). Sharing knowledge and ideas, or rather complaining and gossiping are an important part of our culture. After about 6 hours of slacking, we perform roughly 2 hours of work. We truly have it rough.
Dinner
A stereotypical Dutch dinner will consist of potatoes, vegetables and meat. This delectable combination allowed the Dutch to remain the tallest people for many years. In addition, adding potatoes to dinner lowers the total cost quite significantly. We are a very stingy people, after all.
This concludes the first edition of our introduction into Dutch culture. If you liked the article, please do consider leaving a small token of your appreciation in the form of some BTC. Next time, we will discuss the 'kringverjaardag'. Until then, peace
