Despite the global passion and obsession for football, the official national sport by law in Argentina is actually a traditional sport called Pato. Played on horseback, it combines elements of polo and basketball. Its history dates back to the 17th century when gauchos competed for a leather bag containing a live duck, before it was banned for long periods due to extreme violence. It was later reorganized with a leather ball equipped with handles and officially declared the country's national sport in 1953
