Turkey hosts one of the deepest and oldest underground cities in the world, Derinkuyu, which was entirely carved into soft volcanic rock to accommodate over twenty thousand people along with their livestock and supplies.

This remarkable city extends across eight levels below the surface to a depth of roughly eighty meters. It features an ingenious ventilation system powered by thousands of shafts that carry fresh air down to the lowest levels. The complex includes an intricate network of passages, kitchens, bakeries, workshops, stables, and even schools and chapels. For defense against ancient invasions and wars, the city could be sealed from the inside using massive, round stone doors that could only be operated from within.

Fascinatingly, this massive city was discovered entirely by accident in 1963 when a local resident was renovating a wall in his home and noticed a gap behind it, revealing an entrance to an extraordinary, vast network previously unknown to the modern world
