Uzbekistan preserves the revered "Uthman Quran" (also known as the Samarkand Kufic Quran) at the Hast-Imam Complex in Tashkent. It is widely considered one of the oldest nearly complete Quranic manuscripts in existence, written in the ancient Kufic script on parchment made of deer skin, entirely without diacritical marks or dots.

What makes this manuscript so remarkable—beyond its immense historical age—are the dark stains across its pages, which tradition and many historians attribute to the blood of the third Caliph, Uthman ibn Affan, who was assassinated while reading it. The manuscript’s extraordinary journey spans thousands of kilometers: traveling from Medina to Baghdad, then to Samarkand, later seized by Tsarist Russia and taken to Saint Petersburg, before being returned by the Soviets to Uzbekistan
