Poland hosts a unique inland sand area known as the Bledow Desert. While often called the Polish Sahara, it is not a true climatic desert, but rather an expanse of inland dunes formed through a combination of natural conditions and medieval human activity.

The origins date back to the medieval era, when intensive deforestation for local silver and lead mining cleared the dense forests. This lowered the water table and exposed deep glacial sand deposits accumulated during the last Ice Age.

Geologically, it is classified as a landscape of inland sand dunes rather than an arid climatic desert. Originally covering a much larger area, natural reforestation and active conservation efforts have reduced its open sand area over time
