Day 9

🇳🇬 Nigeria🇳🇬

Nigeria is the native home of one of the most uniquely intriguing aquatic creatures: the African Lungfish. Unlike typical fish, it possesses functional lungs that allow it to breathe atmospheric air directly instead of relying solely on gills.

When rivers and marshes dry up during the dry season, this fish burrows deep into the mud and secretes a protective mucous cocoon around its body, entering a biological state known as aestivation. Remarkably, it can survive inside the completely dry, packed mud without food or water for up to 4 years. During this period, its metabolic processes drop to a minimum as it breathes air through a tiny tube left in the mud, waiting until the rains return to fill the swamps and revive its aquatic life
