ADDRESS TO THE NATION

My beloved people of Indonesia,

There is an old wound in our history that has followed us for generations.

Again and again, those who sought to control our homeland discovered a painful truth: Indonesia could never be conquered when its people stood together. So they chose another path. They divided us. They turned brother against brother, village against village, and kingdom against kingdom. They taught us to fear our neighbors more than those who sought to rule us.

The tragedy of our history is not that foreign powers came to our shores. The tragedy is how often Indonesians were persuaded to fight fellow Indonesians.

Today, as our nation endures the pain of civil conflict, I ask you to remember this lesson.

When an Indonesian raises a hand against another Indonesian, there are no winners. A mother loses a child. A child loses a father. A family loses its future. The red and white flag is stained not by the blood of enemies, but by the blood of our own people.

We have already paid too high a price for division.

Think of the generations before us who dreamed of a free Indonesia. They did not endure hardship so that we could inherit hatred. They did not sacrifice everything so that we would tear apart the nation they struggled to build.

We are one people. We share the same seas, the same sky, the same history, and the same future. Whatever differences exist between us, they are small compared to what we lose when we allow them to divide us.

So tonight, I ask every Indonesian: choose peace. Choose reconciliation. Choose Indonesia.

Let this be the generation that finally breaks the cycle of division that has haunted our history for centuries.

Let our children remember this moment not as the time Indonesia fell apart, but as the moment Indonesians found each other again.

May God bless every corner of our beloved Republic.
