The silence in Berlin is heavier than the lead plating on my port gondola. Usually, election season in the Fatherland sounds like a Wagner opera performed by heavy machinery—shouting, industrial grinding, and the occasional explosion of a political career. But this? This is the silence of a library after a bomb threat. Die Eiserne Lerche floats lazily above the city, tethered to reality only by gravity and my dwindling patience. Down below, the Congress elections are underway, a spectacle as thrilling as watching paint dry on a rainy Tuesday in Bielefeld. The posters wave in the wind, promising prosperity, Ordnung, and stable exchange rates, but the streets are suspiciously empty. It seems the entire populace is holding its breath, or perhaps they have all migrated to a server where the weather is better.

And speaking of migration, our sensors—which usually only pick up static and the complaints of my mechanic Hans—have intercepted a signal from the void. It’s coming from the "Dev Server," a digital purgatory where no player treads. There, in the vast, empty code-scape, sits Astrah. Like Napoleon on St. Helena, but with better ping and fewer British guards. He has crowned himself Chancellor of Nothing, Emperor of the Null Pointer Exception. One can almost picture him there, standing on a digital cliff edge, hand tucked into his waistcoat, gazing out over a population of three, including himself. He drafts laws that no one reads, declares wars on imaginary foes, and probably wins every election with 100% of the vote. It is a tragic, almost poetic exile. A king without a kingdom, ruling over a perfectly obedient, non-existent people. It is the ultimate Schadenfreude.
Meanwhile, the rest of the world offers little to distract me from my cold coffee. In Ireland, a melodrama unfolds that rivals the worst telenovelas. "The REAL Truth About Ireland," they call it—a he-said-she-said shouting match between Rag and Libertas that involves reparations, timed-out users, and bruised egos. It’s a storm in a pint glass. Further south, a "Middle Eastern Alliance" has formed, announcing itself with the subtlety of a sledgehammer, promising an "impenetrable fortress." I’ve seen fortresses made of words before; they usually burn quite nicely. And in Greece? They stand on the "Edge of Liberation," which sounds heroic until you realize they’ve been standing on that edge so long they’ve likely built a kiosk and started selling souvenirs.
So here we drift, between the spectre of a digital Napoleon and the tedious reality of German bureaucracy. Hans asks if we should set course for this "Dev Server" to rescue the fallen Emperor. I look at him, then at the empty sky, then at my coffee. "No, Hans," I reply. "Let him have his empty empire. Real power is having someone to tax." The engines hum a low, bored rhythm. We wait. We watch. And we pray that someone, somewhere, does something stupid enough to wake us up.
