Amber - the gold in the North, (Yes this is a kind of shitty refence to GoT)
The route to trade amber was first big trade network that connected Baltics with other further parts of the world. It was a first huge economic bridge between Baltic tribes and Mediterranean area.
Amber - fossilized tree resin was highly sought after in Roman empire. This trade route was a huge economical, cultural and technological highway.
Why anyone cared about some fossilized tree? (I know I know, I should be the one answering questions)
Well, mainly because of these three reasons:
1) Properties - A) it was warm to the touch. B) it creates static electricity if rubbed(attracts tinny tiny thingies(The Greeks noticed this and called amber "ELEKTRON" (which is where our modern word "electricity" comes from)) C) It burns and creates lovely aroma which made it useful for religious rituals and incenses.
2)Status of luxury - a small figurine made of amber could cost more than a healthy slave. Emperor Nero was obsessed with it.
3)Medicine and amulets - It was used in medicine (Not sure if it works tho) and as amulets, especially to protect children from evil spirits. (This did help, unless you have prove, that at least once it failed and a child was hurt by the evil spirit while wearing one).
Day 4 in game, article number 4.
