So, I’ve joined War Era — that online strategy game where everyone sounds like a political and/or military genius while I’m just trying to figure out how to equip a set of boots that I just won out of a random suitcase that I know nothing about. Within minutes, the chat was full of people throwing around terms like “MU,” “CULO,” and “eco mode.” I just said “lekker man” and hoped nobody noticed I was panicking.
My first mission? Get a job (that’s what everyone tells me to do). Easy, right? I found a job to harvest grain at a company based somewhere in Asia with a wage of 0.06. “Couldn’t be that bad” I thought. Turns out I signed myself up for slavery.
Then came the battles. Some government big-shot instructed everyone to fight in defense of one of the battling parties (who apparently was an ally). I thought I had to “Attack” and “Defend”. Turns out I cancelled myself out and just wasted all my (limited) resources.
Meanwhile, the veterans talk diplomacy and strategy in order to advance our country’s glorious cause. I nod profusely to at least look the part, but what they don’t know (and this is the true confession) is that I am probably older than our President, Vice President, all the ministers, and probably the whole congress too.
But honestly? I’m loving it. Every diplomatic crisis gives me a thrill. Every “49 damage”, a sense of contribution. Every battle won, a celebration with brothers (and sisters) in arms – people that I don’t know from Adam, but who have welcomed me home.
War Era isn’t about winning (clearly, because I’m not); it’s about keeping the core of your country alive through camaraderie, through partnership, and through dedication.
A strong core, in turn, gives rise to a mighty empire.
