This is not the first tournament in the game, but it is the first tournament of which you can read about in the form of a complete commentary.
I will try to give some extra tidbits of information about the background of the fights, in the form of country history, power, conflicts, notable players, perhaps some fun facts. I will keep it short and it might seem superficial at times, but we cannot be writing books in this hamster.
It's going to be even more interesting for new players, because I, the writer, have been playing since August and have served in various governments, wrote a lot, and read even more. Hopefully, you will leave this article with a greater grasp of "who is who and why".
I will briefly cover all teams of the round of 16.This article has been written at the start of the tournament, before round 1 ended in any battle.

These days leading up to the first round I would say are overall semi-peaceful. There has been currently no war in the Americas for some days, and only "usual" revolts and "smaller" wars populate Asia, Oceania and Africa. In the day of the first matches, Europe is quiet as well, perhaps preparing for the qualifier matches, or just farming and scheming behind the curtain.
The only "outliers" for these are some battles of https://app.warera.io/country/6813b6d446e731854c7ac7aa, a huge duel between https://app.warera.io/country/6813b6d446e731854c7ac7ba and https://app.warera.io/country/6813b6d446e731854c7ac7a2 in southern Italy, strong Romanian defense battles in the Balkans, and a huge incursion of https://app.warera.io/country/6813b6d446e731854c7ac7b6 into https://app.warera.io/country/683ddd2c24b5a2e114af1612 via https://app.warera.io/country/6873d0ea1758b40e712b5f5c. All these combined rack up a lot more than 100 million damage. As I write this text (January 16), a second attack on ZA's https://app.warera.io/region/683ddd3f36dbc90b780475a7 commenced.
-In general, the largest countries of the game or the largest mercenary groups tend to win the tournaments, high levels, high wealth, stronger fighter builds being obvious reasons.
-Disinterest: the game interface displays that the winner receives a skill bonus of ENERGY apart from the continuous stream of red cases throughout. I have seen complaints before that it isn't really an interesting enough incentive. Later edit: the grand prize is 10 Energy, or, put differently, 1 more "work" button per hour. We will see if it satisfies players enough.
Players might decide not to spend precious hunger items and bullets on such an "optional" activity. Especially countries who have not broken their fighting streak for quite some time or only recently took a breather, like for example https://app.warera.io/country/6813b6d446e731854c7ac79a who plunged all the way to https://app.warera.io/region/6813b7089403bc4170a5d90f. But this remains to be seen.
-National pride: When you cannot count on satisfying prizes to get your players out of eco, you might count on national pride. It feels good for large percentages of the population to know that their country is the "top dog" in Warera, along with a shiny trophy icon next to every citizen's username saying that they won the tournament.
During the last tournament, which hosted MUs fighting for the grand prize, when the winner was announced, you could see the chats filled with citizens of Argentina cheering and members of the winning MU https://app.warera.io/mu/6873fa8736853585b90829cf taking to the pixelated streets of Warera to celebrate.
-Breaking monotony: There is no "G.C. vs Ñ" war right now, nor there is a "CWLO vs PABLO" global clash. Apart from annoying little dots and a bit of map painting, no large dies have been cast, to paraphrase Caesar. Therefore, players might fight for the simple reason that it might be a nice change of pace to break the current pseudo-Farmera.

"Precision" won't fight however, because to my knowledge every heavy hitter is in eco currently.
The most recent mercenary addition is the https://app.warera.io/mu/695d2a3f9cddbde050bebbbb, made up of https://app.warera.io/country/6813b6d446e731854c7ac79a elite veterans who installed themselves in the tropical islands of https://app.warera.io/country/6873d0ea1758b40e712b5f76. Tournaments, either country or MU, benefit groups like these with increased exposure, fame, and clients.
I will end here as I wait for the tournament to start. Less than one hour now until we know the first round country shuffling.

In Team 9 you got the very experienced Romanian veterans from Lesotho, two Romanian proxy nations, https://app.warera.io/country/6813b6d546e731854c7ac87d, who is currently rested up and has been seen to deliver millions of damage in the past by its 57 players.
https://app.warera.io/country/6813b6d546e731854c7ac82f, currently wiped and occupied by France, Uruguay and Venezuela, has not had military activity and can, in theory, use its 72 players to bite its adversaries. https://app.warera.io/country/683ddd2c24b5a2e114af15b7 can also benefit from its 32 players, while Luxembourg's Argentinian players might not be interested to fight against their ally Chile.
This match can go either way, but i think Team 6 has the upper hand.

The largest countries in Team 2 are Russia with 81 active citizens, and Iraq with 48. DR Congo will probably not fight, as they are the spearhead of Portugal in Africa's equator region. Meanwhile, Fiji's 5 citizens are all high-level.
Team 3's MVP nation is undoubtedly Portugal. This country has come a long way in the last months, with some baby booms and much battle experience making it a military powerhouse to be respected. This one is going to be a particularly eclectic match. In Team 16 you have nations which have fought one another, Argentina and Serbia.

With its 92 players, the roaring old empire with its passionate and expert players used to be referred to, along with other South American nations, as "LATAM" (Latin America). This name, for months on end, inspired respect, fear, admiration and hatred alike.
https://app.warera.io/country/6813b6d446e731854c7ac7ba, with its 54 players, is also a force not to be taken lightly, as they have been a great ally in the last world war for the CWLO side, and have to this day partly conquered Italy 3 times that I know of. I am not sure if they are gonna fight alongside Argentina.
The other nations are much smaller, but they potentially can do some damage once you add them up. Team 15 is a damage factory. Between France's 127 players, Sweden's 86 and Paraguay's experienced Romanian veterans, I would easily envision this team reaching the grand final. https://app.warera.io/country/6813b6d446e731854c7ac79a's players have not been demoralized by the several wipes they received, and France keeps raising from the ashes like a rooster-shaped phoenix, if they still got items from all the fights.

Both Sweden and France have been pretty quiet the last few days, indicating that they might have resources for the tournament. https://app.warera.io/country/6813b6d546e731854c7ac838's forces might not commit as much because of the several fights they had in South Africa.

This might inspire both to take up arms.
Unfortunately, https://app.warera.io/country/6813b6d446e731854c7ac7e8, a 23 player nation, has found itself allied with https://app.warera.io/country/6813b6d546e731854c7ac858, a country 3 times Greece's size that hits against it often, because of its alliance with Romania. It is not hard to think that their efforts together might be half-hearted. https://app.warera.io/country/6873d0ea1758b40e712b5f59 might not be fond of helping this team since both Venezuela and Moldova have hit against South Africa's interests, ZA being Eswatini's ally.
Team 5 is not a much a better match-up, either, despite an enormous damage potential. https://app.warera.io/country/6813b6d546e731854c7ac8cb is known to be a deadly mercenary group who can deal millions of coordinated damage. However, they don't always fight without bounties.
Don't be fooled by https://app.warera.io/country/6813b6d546e731854c7ac835's 30 active citizens, however. They are hardcore players who, just a few months ago, owned most of Africa in cooperation with Argentina, and had their claws dug deep in international politics. Despite lower numbers and wipes, this LATAM beast still has some fangs, which were showed when they gulped Brazil a few weeks ago.

Spain, although not as large as Romania, Portugal or Venezuela, might deal some damage this tournament, provided they convince some more players to stop eco farming. If they overlook their differences, Team 5 is a good contender for the finals, in my opinion.

The curse of having the most active citizens - you are mostly alone. I'm talking about South Africa. They repeat, I believe, the history of the last country tournament, where they were the single country in that team. At least, now they got https://app.warera.io/user/6886abd84fbe6c954b761479's https://app.warera.io/mu/6937156f6507088f72f4f50b bolstering their ranks and https://app.warera.io/user/683ab6debd2c4cb970202ae9's independent Spaniards bathing in the Levant sun, veterans of Warera. I'm not sure, however, between Lesotho's pounding and Team 4's roster, that Team 10 stands any chance. Wrong place, wrong time. Awetha must wait for next time.
Team 4, however, is an entirely different, pastel story. Not only does it have https://app.warera.io/country/683ddd2c24b5a2e114af15d7, perhaps this game's most dedicated freedom fighters, lead by https://app.warera.io/user/683ea783e25a415ee1c7409b, but they are "blessed" with the newest (until the islands update) mini-state: the https://app.warera.io/country/69614d0e5d798a861630c58e. The Vatican is home to some of LATAM's strongest fighters. One of them, https://app.warera.io/user/681d8310470bf2a1423d8d16, fought in the grand final with his former MU in the last tournament.
Add to this nightmare a number of Portugal's proxies with a grudge against South Africa, including https://app.warera.io/country/6873d0ea1758b40e712b5f2e, and https://app.warera.io/country/6813b6d546e731854c7ac84b, and I don't think South Africa has any chance.
And the nightmare isn't over. With https://app.warera.io/country/6813b6d446e731854c7ac7b8 against them, a country on 2 continents and 139 players, ZA's dreams will remain most likely dreams.
I think Team 4 has a good chance to reach the finals.

This match kind of reflects geopolitical tensions. https://app.warera.io/country/6813b6d546e731854c7ac852 and https://app.warera.io/country/6813b6d446e731854c7ac7b2 won't complain that they get to fight Romania again. Most of the rest of the nations are small, and I don't think will invest much damage against the two giants in the other team.
However, it will be interesting to look what https://app.warera.io/country/6813b6d546e731854c7ac862 does, a nation who not long ago had 20 players and now has 103. Also, it will be interesting to see what https://app.warera.io/country/6813b6d546e731854c7ac845 will do. With 55 players, it's not a breach of the peace treaty with Romania to engage in a friendly albeit bloody competition.
It's also a good opportunity for the mercenaries https://app.warera.io/mu/695d2a3f9cddbde050bebbbb to advertise some of their metal & might against two giants.
And then we get to Team 13. https://app.warera.io/country/6813b6d446e731854c7ac7b6 has got 89 eligible fighters in this tournament. It has had an empire for many months and it has only gotten better at dealing damage. It measures easily with greats such as Argentina and Venezuela, with expert tactical players who fight with brains as much as brawns. It will be interesting to see how much Romania dedicates to this tournament, seeing that they went on an expedition of punishment and memes against ZA.

Now, it stretches from the English Channel to the North Sea and even touches Romania's Hungarian territories. With 113 players and a good relationship with Romania, the energy prize might tickle these two nations' appetite for profit.

They might have been enemies in the last war, but I think they will enjoy each other's company here.

https://app.warera.io/country/6813b6d446e731854c7ac7e2, despite only having 13 citizens, has been one of the biggest damage dealers ever in the game, with players like https://app.warera.io/user/682349bbc8d83152250ee9c0 and https://app.warera.io/user/6828d1ec16e733d29aeea3f7 turning matches around like it's nothing. However, they fought a lot lately and I'm not sure how much they are gonna commit this time.
https://app.warera.io/country/6813b6d446e731854c7ac7eb is a large empire which is held together by its 77 players and proxies. However, they have been criticized in the last global war of not dealing enough damage for allies when it mattered and looking only to their immediate interest. Team 14's poster boy is battle-hardened https://app.warera.io/country/6813b6d446e731854c7ac7a2, who was one of the major countries of the PABLO alliance and has since had a baby boom (91 players). They have recently fought a massive battle with Serbia, and I don't know if they feel like committing to a fight against Team 11.
https://app.warera.io/country/6813b6d446e731854c7ac7a0's recent baby boom (128) will make them a fierce opponent in the future, but maybe they won't beat the experience of Team 11 today. https://app.warera.io/country/6873d0ea1758b40e712b5f56, originally a Portuguese off-shoot, continues to be a major player in the Indian Ocean and South-East Asia, but these opponents might pack too heavy a punch for them.
