The War Started by a Stray Dog
In October 1925, tensions along the border between Greece and Bulgaria were running high following the aftermath of World War I. A Greek soldier stationed near the border pass of Demir Kapia was walking his dog when the pet bolted and crossed over the border line into Bulgarian territory.
When the soldier ran across the frontier to retrieve his pet, a Bulgarian border guard shot and killed him.
The incident sparked immediate military escalation. The Greek government issued an ultimatum demanding compensation and an apology, and when Bulgaria refused, Greek troops crossed the border, occupying several Bulgarian villages.
The brief conflict resulted in over fifty casualties before the League of Nations stepped in to mediate a ceasefire, ordering the Greek military to withdraw and pay an indemnity of 45,000 pounds.
