In the 1960s, at the height of the Cold War, the CIA’s Directorate of Science & Technology hatched an unhinged plan to eavesdrop on Soviet officials in Washington, D.C.: Operation Acoustic Kitty.
The agency figured that while human spies drew suspicion, nobody ever pays attention to a stray alley cat lounging near a park bench.
Over five years, the CIA poured roughly $20 million into engineering the ultimate feline intelligence asset:
Surgical wiretapping: A veterinary surgeon spent an hour implanting a tiny microphone inside a cat’s ear canal, a miniature radio transmitter at the base of its skull, and a thin wire antenna woven straight through its tail fur.
The hunger problem: During indoor trials, handlers discovered a fatal flaw in their biological hardware. Whenever the cat got hungry, distracted, or bored, it simply wandered off instead of listening to targets.
More surgery: The CIA performed a second operation to bypass the cat's hunger drives, convincing themselves the animal was finally field-ready.
The 10-second debut: For its first live mission, operatives drove an unmarked surveillance van to a park outside the Soviet compound, calibrated their listening gear, and released the bionic cat across the street from two men chatting on a bench.
The cat stepped off the curb, walked ten feet into traffic, and was immediately flattened by a passing taxi cab.
The operatives scrambled to recover the body before the Soviets could discover a wired cyborg cat in the street. Shortly after, a heavily redacted CIA memo officially closed the project, concluding with bureaucratic masterpiece phrasing that cats "would not lend themselves to our specialized needs."
Spending five years and twenty million taxpayer dollars wiring up a secret-agent housecat only for it to get taken out by a cab driver ten seconds into its first shift is peak Cold War incompetence. That wraps up Day 31!
