WHY IS IT CALLED GREENLAND?
A country covered by ice and snow.
So⦠why Greenland?
The name goes back more than 1,000 years to Erik the Red, a Norse explorer who was exiled from Iceland and sailed west to explore the land.
According to the Icelandic sagas, Erik returned to Iceland and spoke of the new land as βGreenland.β By naming it Greenland, he wanted to encourage the Icelandic settlers to travel to Greenland and settle there.

And Greenland really does have a green side.
Especially in the south, you can find green valleys, grass-covered landscapes and even farming and sheep farms during the summer. ππΏ

Today, around 80% of Greenland is covered by the Ice Sheet.
So perhaps the name isn't quite as strange as it first sounds.
Ice.
Green valleys.
Greenland.
