EU Kids Act and why you should contact your MEPs to ask them to reject it

The EU has proposed the EU KIDS Act, ostensibly to “protect children” online. But the proposal goes far beyond social media.
For games, the proposal includes mandatory age verification through app stores, alongside requirements governing how online games interact with minors.

What this means for WarEra

  • Much higher costs. WarEra may need new age-verification systems and more complicated processes to comply with the law. For such a small game, these costs could be enough to make the EU market not worth supporting.

  • Age verification becomes mandatory. Players in the EU may have to go through an age-verification system to access the game.

  • More sensitive data infrastructure. Even if WarEra does not directly collect IDs, it may have to rely on third-party age-verification services to prove a player's age.

  • Worst case: WarEra could have to leave the EU market. If complying with these requirements costs more than the EU market is worth, smaller games may simply stop serving EU players.

The KIDS Act is still a proposal. Now is the time to pay attention.

Stop Killing Games has put together a useful breakdown of what the proposal could mean for games:

Read the proposal yourself (100 pages, not for the faint of heart): EU KIDS Act — EUR-Lex

The proposal is currently before the European Parliament and Council and is not yet EU law. This is the time to let the Parliament know that this is unacceptable.
