Gambling: addiction or entertainment?

Now that's the question.

Some would argue it's both. Others would argue it's neither.

The gambler alone understands it's actually a philosophy—small, ruthless, and beautifully honest. You watch someone spend gold on something they cannot touch, cannot keep, cannot return.

Then you watch them smile when the moment passes. That smile is not madness. That smile is the quiet victory of having, for one fleeting second, absolutely no interest in being sensible.

What is addiction, after all, if not a promise that the next moment will finally break the monotony of sense?

What is entertainment, if not the permission to stare into the void and call it a fair trade?

Which makes you wonder: if a person knows they're probably paying for nothing, what are they buying, really—and why does it feel, for a moment, like enough?
