The Siege of Apuolė is the earliest recorded military conflict and the oldest documented settlement in the territory of modern Lithuania. (Currently Apuolės village near Klaipėda city)
The event was recorded around 875 AD by the German archbishop Rimbert. The Curonians—a Baltic tribe—had previously risen up against Swedish rule and successfully repelled a subsequent invasion by Danish Vikings.
Swedish king Olaf launched a massive retalliotary attack to reclaim control. Apuolė was sieged for 9 days. On the 9 th. day they surrendered, gave up the gold they managed to loot from Danes and paid ransom for every citizen in the castle along with 30 slaves and loyalty to Swedish king.
It is said that there were 15 000 soldiers defending the castle, but the numbers could have been exagerrated to make victory more impressive.
