SERGEANT STUBBY: THE DOG WHO WENT TO WAR

PART 1 OF 4: The Dog No One Wanted to Leave Behind

United States, 1917.

Before becoming one of the most famous military dogs in history, Stubby was a stray who wandered around a military training camp in New Haven, Connecticut.

He was small and compact, looking a bit like a Boston Terrier. He didn't have a uniform, he wasn't officially part of the military, and no one could have imagined that he would one day cross the ocean to take part in a world war.

But everything changed when he met a young soldier named Robert Conroy.

Conroy was training with other troops on the grounds of Yale University. That's where he found Stubby and began to grow attached to him. Little by little, the dog got used to being around the soldiers and started tagging along during their drills.

For the men, this little dog became an unexpected companion.

Amid the marches, the exercises, and the uncertainty of a war spreading across Europe, Stubby offered something simple yet invaluable: companionship.

But the day finally came when the regiment received orders to deploy to France.

The soldiers were preparing to join the fight in World War I. But Stubby was a dog, and he wasn't officially authorized to go with them.

Conroy faced a difficult decision.

Would he leave behind the dog who had become his companion?

No.

The young soldier managed to smuggle Stubby aboard the transport ship. And just like that, the little dog crossed the Atlantic alongside the men of the 102nd Infantry Regiment, part of the 26th U.S. Division.

When they finally arrived in France, Stubby discovered a world vastly different from the one he had known back home.

The roar of cannons echoed in the distance. Trenches scarred the landscape, and soldiers lived under the constant threat of enemy attacks.

War wasn't a training exercise.

It was a fight for survival.

And Stubby was about to prove that he could do much more than simply keep his human companion company.

What no one realized was that this little dog would soon begin alerting soldiers to dangers they hadn't even noticed themselves.

To be continued in Part 2: The Dog Who Could Sense Danger.
