French Rooster #20 - A Gaullist Summer

Here’s a look back at July and August in France under Azzazel’s Gaullist presidency. The French Rooster team has put together a quick roundup of the summer.

A Year On, a Long-Awaited Return !

Last summer, https://app.warera.io/user/6813be2f166755764730ff81 was at the height of his popularity, leading a prosperous and ambitious France. French voters decided to hand him the keys to the country once again, putting him in charge for two months. He first defeated https://app.warera.io/user/693f5427a4c9b5b39c783077 with nearly 71% of the vote to his opponent’s 24%, then won the following election with 53%, ahead of his main rival https://app.warera.io/user/697874a277868b1f769e3d90 on 29%.

As he leaves office, he looks back on those two months in an address to the nation :

After two months as President, the time has come for me to hand over the reins.

I have served France with the same conviction as the deep love I have for our country, through both the good times and the difficult ones.

I would like to sincerely thank everyone who placed their trust in me and supported me throughout these past two months.

I also want to thank all those who worked alongside me. I was fortunate to be able to rely on a strong, united government, fully committed to serving our country.

I may be leaving the presidency, but I am not leaving my commitment to our nation behind. France draws its strength not only from its soldiers, but also from its economists, who continue to prove just how vital they are when the fighting begins.

To those who will now take over, I wish you the very best. I have no doubt that you have what it takes to lead our great country to the top!

From Fight Club to Olive Union

Azzazel’s election as leader of Fight Club was meant to breathe new life into the coalition of Inglorious Basterds and Olive Union. The French president had a clear plan: simple orders, shared priorities and a headquarters capable of coordinating the member nations.

But the reorganisation never came together. Despite his repeated requests, Azzazel lamented the lack of clear orders and any real military command. Fight Club eventually dissolved, leaving the two alliances independent again, each with its own leadership.

France stayed with Olive Union, where its president kept a seat on the council. For the French government, the goal remained the same: an organised alliance it could rely on and support that reflected France’s own commitment.

The Armistice with Germany

The French government had expected Germany to reclaim its territories, believing they would be difficult to keep under occupation given the size of the German population. France therefore withdrew without putting up much resistance. But the possibility of Germany pushing further had already prompted preparations for the country’s defence. Meanwhile, negotiations eventually led to an armistice.

The agreement met with a mixed reception in France. Some, especially veterans, understood its strategic value. Others, recruited during the “baby boom” mobilisation against Germany, were disappointed.

France then tried to maintain cordial relations with the German government and began a major overhaul of its military organisation to prepare for the future.

Reorganising the French Army

At Azzazel’s initiative, https://app.warera.io/user/6813b758efecdf9bab1950b3 and https://app.warera.io/user/6998737ff2bf978ef0d68e01 were appointed to the General Staff. They had two goals: completely reorganise an army that had been left without leadership for many months, and get the French back into combat. After two months of intensive work, both goals had been achieved:

• An increase from an average of 30–40 players specced for combat to 110–120, tripling the number of fighters ready to open fire.

A Belgian Joke

Belgium Pulls a “Prank” on France: The French Still Got a Taste of Belgian Ammo Before Dessert

To celebrate their national day, the Belgians had the brilliant idea of shelling France. A declaration of love, Belgian-style, no doubt, somewhere between two servings of moules-frites.

At first, France thought Brussels had genuinely emptied its ammo stockpile. Panic set in, faces grew longer than the queue outside a chip shop.

Then, magnanimously, the Belgian neighbors finally admitted: “It was a joke.” A Belgian joke, then… the kind of humor that smells a bit like cheese forgotten in the back of the fridge for three weeks, or more.

Both sides laid down arms just as quickly, France without letting go of its jambon-beurre, Belgium presumably back to its fries and beer. A friendly ceasefire, sealed over a misunderstanding and a bit of wasted ammunition.

Clearly, too much fry oil makes for questionable diplomacy, confusing artillery with seasoning.

So, dear Belgian neighbors, for your next national day: France is happy to trade its jambon-beurre for your fries, as long as the tanks stay in the garage.

Silver, Second Star will have to wait

France finished second in the summer Tournament of Nations, behind Germany. The French missed out on a second star, but the Ministry of Defence still praised their run. Even with the French and Belgians on the same side this time, they could not match the German juggernaut. Still, a second consecutive final showed just how much the French enjoy these tournaments, and how well their forces can work together.

Operation Copacabana

After weeks of waiting and debate in Congress, with the French eager for expansion, France declared war on Brazil and launched Operation Copacabana, presented as a campaign planned jointly with Olive Union.

Argentina opened hostilities in São Paulo, while France attacked Belém. France and its allies soon won the battle for Belém after a particularly tense second round. Argentina’s contribution was hailed as exceptional and played a major part in that first victory.

The offensive immediately moved on to Fortaleza, partly to prevent a Brazilian counterattack on the newly conquered territory. The government then put up the campaign’s largest bounty so far to keep the damage coming through the night.

Yet the military successes did not solve the coordination problems. French officials felt that the alliance’s support still fell short of what had been agreed. Talks began with Olive Union’s leaders to secure the expected reinforcements and keep the operation going.

Argentina’s capture of Brasília marked the next stage of the South American campaign. Buoyed by the allied victories, the French government announced plans to finish conquering Brazil before pushing on into Venezuela. That next push, however, ended in failure.

The campaign’s record was therefore mixed: a Franco-Argentine victory over Brazil, with its capital falling to Argentina, but a setback in Venezuela. The gains in Brazil were not enough to fulfil all the ambitions announced for the region. The outcome caused a stir in the French Congress and among the country’s diplomats, who saw an opportunity to chart a new course.
