During normal gameplay, you will regularly receive cases. Based on the current market prices, opening them is usually slightly profitable. However, if you do not want to spend time evaluating every item, selling the cases directly on the open market is also a perfectly valid option. At the moment, the difference between the expected value of a case and its market price is only around 0.1–0.3 coins.
As a general rule, blue items and above should be sold on the market. Unless you are very wealthy or already know exactly what you are doing, it is usually not worth using them early in the game. That money is better invested into upgrading your companies and strengthening your passive economy.
Once your basic economy is up and running and you have a few passive companies, you should already be using a knife and green gear. One important thing to avoid is the green pistol, since its ammunition cost is too high for early progression.
A detail many new players do not know is that when equipment durability reaches zero during combat, the item is scrapped for 1/3 of its brand-new scrap value. In practice, this means the true cost of an item is its market price minus half of the scrap value. For green gear, this is almost the same as paying nearly 33% of the market price.
When you open cases and receive gear, always do a quick evaluation. Any green item without maximum stats is usually not worth keeping, since its market price is often very close to its scrap value. For this reason, most green items without max stats should be scrapped immediately. This gives 18 scrap in return. The main exceptions are pistols, which should always be scrapped, and helmets, where 28%+ can be considered close to max.

The best approach is simple: sell scrap on the market and buy max-stat green items instead. This usually costs only about 0.1–0.2 coins more, but gives you much better equipment in return — often almost twice as effective.

For weapons, the knife is usually the best choice. The knife market varies a lot, so it is worth making your own cost-effectiveness check before buying. As a general guideline, you should avoid knives with less than 30 attack or 4% critical strike.
These are just some of the tips I share in my military unit. It is open for both new and veteran players.
