The fall of Constantinople on May 29, 1453, marked a monumental turning point in world history, bringing an end to the Byzantine Empire and signaling the rise of the Ottoman Empire under Sultan Mehmed II, who earned the title "Fatih" (the Conqueror).
For centuries, Constantinople was considered an impregnable fortress due to its massive Theodosian Walls. However, 21-year-old Sultan Mehmed II utilized innovative military tactics—including massive cannons and transporting Ottoman warships overland to bypass the Byzantine sea defense—to finally breach the city after a 53-day siege.
For the Muslim world, this victory carried deep spiritual significance, as it fulfilled a well-known prophecy made by the Prophet Muhammad centuries earlier.
The Prophecy (Hadith)
The Prophet Muhammad predicted the conquest of the city in a famous hadith (saying), recorded in several collections of Islamic tradition, including Imam Ahmad’s Musnad:
"Verily, you shall conquer Constantinople. What a wonderful leader will he be, and what a wonderful army will that army be!"
