Today is King's Day in the Netherlands, the annual celebration of King Willem-Alexander's birthday. The entire country turns orange: orange clothes, orange flags, outdoor markets, and music everywhere.
Two things are basically mandatory today:
Beer. Just drink one. You don't need a reason beyond "it's Koningsdag."
Tompouce. This is a Dutch pastry made of puff pastry, thick custard filling, and pink icing on top. On Koningsdag the icing turns orange. It's messy to eat and absolutely worth it. If you've never had one, fix that.
You don't have to be Dutch to join in. Grab something orange, raise a glass, and shout "Lang leve de Koning!" (Long live the King) at least once today. Nobody will judge you.
