For Haru Urara, the answer was very different.

Between 1998 and 2004, she ran 113 races at Kochi Racecourse without winning a single one. Her record ended at 0 wins, 5 second place finishes, and 7 third place finishes.

Yet people kept coming to watch her.

At the height of the Haru Urara boom, more than 13,000 spectators gathered at Kochi Racecourse for her 106th race. They knew her record. They knew winning was unlikely. But they still came to cheer for her, perhaps that's what made Haru Urara special.

She wasn't celebrated because she was the best horse on the track. She became loved because she kept going back onto it.

Every race was another chance to try. Another chance to give her best. Another reason for people to cheer.

Her story became a reminder that success isn't always about finishing first. Sometimes, simply continuing to do something you love despite the setbacks can mean something to the people watching.

Today, on the first anniversary of her passing on September 9, 2025, Haru Urara remains one of racing's most unusual and beloved stories.

She never won a race.

But she gave thousands of people a reason to cheer, and a reminder to never give up.
