The Day Napoleon Was Attacked by Rabbits

When people think about Napoleon Bonaparte, they imagine giant battles, marching armies, and dramatic speeches. Few imagine him running in terror from a horde of rabbits.
But according to one famous story, that is exactly what happened.
After signing a peace treaty in 1807, Napoleon’s chief of staff decided to organise a grand rabbit hunt to celebrate. Hundreds — possibly thousands — of rabbits were collected for the event. Aristocrats, officers, and hunters gathered outside Paris expecting an entertaining afternoon.
At first, everything seemed normal.
The cages were opened.
But instead of scattering into the fields, the rabbits charged directly at Napoleon and his men.
The organisers had made a disastrous mistake: many of the rabbits were not wild rabbits at all, but tame domestic rabbits borrowed from farmers. Instead of fearing humans, they associated people with food.
Witnesses claimed the rabbits swarmed toward Napoleon’s boots, climbed onto his clothes, and overwhelmed the hunting party. Officers tried to beat them back with riding crops, but more kept coming. Even Napoleon, one of Europe’s most feared leaders, reportedly retreated to his carriage while rabbits continued attacking from every direction.
For a brief moment, the conqueror of much of Europe was defeated by fluffy animals.
Historians still debate how exaggerated the story became over time, but versions of it were repeated by several writers close to Napoleon’s era. And honestly, that almost makes it better — because history is full of strange moments that sound completely invented.
The same man who fought in legendary battles like Battle of Austerlitz may also have spent one afternoon desperately escaping hungry rabbits.
It is a reminder that even the most powerful people in history could end up in ridiculous situations. Empires rise and fall, kings wage wars, nations change forever… and sometimes rabbits ruin everything.
