How I met her (Part 10)

“Now I actually have to think.”

My friend laughed. “About what?”

“How to keep both of them.”

He stopped laughing. “You're serious?”

“Completely. I'm not breaking up with my girlfriend, and I'm not giving up on her sister either.”

“You do realize they're sisters, right?”

“That's what makes it difficult.”

He shook his head. “So what's your plan?”

“I don't need them to trust me completely. I just need each of them to think they have more reason to trust me than to doubt me.”

My friend smiled. “That's probably the most messed up thing you've said so far.”

“Thank you.”

The next day, my girlfriend asked me to meet her. I knew she was still thinking about everything from the night before, so I knew I couldn't just tell her everything was fine and expect her to believe me.

She started by saying, “I keep thinking about what happened.”

“I know.”

“You were with my sister when I couldn't reach you. Then she admits she might like you, and you still expect me to believe nothing is going on?”

That was fair.

So instead of defending myself immediately, I asked, “Do you actually think I'd be stupid enough to do something with your sister and then stand there with both of you?”

She didn't answer.

I continued, “If I wanted to cheat on you, there are a million easier ways to do it. Why would I choose the one person who could destroy both of our families?”

That made her think.

I wasn't trying to prove I was innocent. I was making the idea of me being guilty sound stupid.

Then I added, “Your sister just got out of a relationship. She was upset, and I was there. If she started feeling something for me, that's not something I planned.”

That part was almost true.

She finally said, “But you like her.”

I smiled. “She's attractive. I'm not blind. But liking someone and actually doing something about it are two different things.”

She went quiet.

I could tell she still had doubts, but they weren't as strong as they had been the night before. She was still watching me carefully and clearly wasn't ready to completely trust me, but at least she wasn't treating me like she'd already caught me.

That was much better.

After a while, she said, “I don't want to lose you because of this.”

“You won't.”

She leaned against me, but I could still feel that little bit of hesitation. She hadn't completely believed me. She just believed me enough to stop pushing for answers.

And honestly, that was all I needed.

Before we left, she suddenly mentioned that her sister wanted to talk to me.

I smiled.

“About what?”

“She didn't say.”

Of course she didn't.

One sister was starting to trust me again, while the other one was starting to like me.

For the first time, I thought maybe keeping both of them wouldn't be as difficult as I expected.

I just had to make sure they never compared notes.
