“This isn't going to happen the way you want it to.”
I leaned back in my chair. “Then tell me how it's going to happen.”
My girlfriend gave me a cold smile. “You still think this is about what you want?”
Fair point. Annoying, but fair.
She explained that neither of them wanted to spend the next few weeks fighting over me, and I wasn't going to keep lying whenever one of them asked an uncomfortable question. Her sister agreed. They'd clearly discussed everything without me, which meant I was already several steps behind.
“So what? You're both breaking up with me?”
“I haven't decided that,” my girlfriend replied.
That was better than a breakup, though not exactly the reassurance I'd hoped for.
Then she asked the question I'd been dreading. Had I wanted her sister to break up with her boyfriend when I'd started getting closer to her?
I could have denied it, but her sister knew enough about our conversations to make that risky. Besides, I'd already admitted my feelings. Pretending I'd been completely innocent would only make me look stupid.
“I thought she deserved better,” I said.
“That's not what I asked.”
I glanced at her sister. She was already looking disappointed.
“Yes,” I admitted. “Part of me hoped you'd break up.”
Her expression changed. “You actually wanted that?”
“I wanted a chance with you.”
The words came out before I could soften them. My girlfriend looked away, and somehow that felt worse than shouting.
Her sister accused me of waiting for her relationship to fail so I could move in when she was vulnerable. I pointed out that I hadn't caused their problems, but she wasn't impressed.
“No. You just enjoyed them.”
I had no answer that would make me look good, so I stopped trying.
My girlfriend walked to the window. For a moment, I thought she'd finally decided to end things. Instead, she turned to her sister and asked whether she still wanted me, knowing everything.
Her sister hesitated before admitting that she did.
Then my girlfriend looked at me.
“And I still love you.”
That caught me off guard. I'd expected anger, tears, maybe another demand that I leave. I hadn't expected her to admit she still wanted me after everything I'd done.
She wasn't forgiving me, though. She made it clear that her feelings hadn't disappeared, but neither had the damage I'd caused. Her sister moved beside her, and they exchanged a look that told me they'd reached some kind of understanding I wasn't part of.
That worried me more than their arguing ever had.
“So where does that leave me?” I asked.
My girlfriend picked up her phone. “Exactly where you belong, June. Waiting.”
She walked out, leaving me alone with her sister. I started to speak, but she came closer and stopped beside my chair.
“You wanted both of us,” she said quietly. “Now you get to find out what that actually costs.”
Then she followed her sister.
I sat there, trying to work out whether I'd just lost them both or somehow kept them within reach.
The worst part wasn't that I'd lost control.
It was that neither of them had decided to let me go.
