For two days, neither sister contacted me.
I told myself I didn't care. Then I checked my phone every ten minutes, which was a fairly convincing way to prove myself wrong.
On the third evening, my girlfriend finally called and asked me to come over. When I arrived, her sister was already there. They sat beside each other, and something about the way they looked at me told me this wasn't another argument.
My girlfriend had been thinking about everything I'd admitted. She still loved me, but she hated the idea of competing with her own sister. Her sister felt the same way. Neither wanted to lose me, but neither wanted to lose each other either.
Then my girlfriend said something I hadn't expected.
“What if we stopped treating this like one of us has to win?”
I stared at her.
Her sister looked nervous. “You mean... neither of us gives him up?”
“I'm saying we could talk about it. Actually talk about it. No secrets, no lies, and no June making decisions for us.”
I should probably mention that I had imagined dozens of ways this situation could end. This wasn't one of them.
They weren't agreeing to anything yet. My girlfriend still had doubts, and her sister wasn't pretending that sharing me would be easy. But for the first time, they were discussing a future where neither had to walk away.
My girlfriend turned to me. “Don't get excited. We haven't decided anything.”
“Wouldn't dream of it,” I said.
Her sister laughed. My girlfriend tried to stay serious, but a smile escaped her too.
And just like that, the atmosphere changed. The three of us were still facing a ridiculous situation, but at least we were finally talking about the same problem instead of fighting over different versions of it.
Then my girlfriend took her sister's hand.
“Let's give it a chance,” she said.
Her sister squeezed her hand back. “Okay. But if we're doing this, we're doing it our way.”
I nodded, trying very hard not to look as delighted as I felt.
For weeks, I'd been trying to keep both sisters without letting either discover the whole truth.
Now they knew everything, and somehow, they were choosing to stay.
I had finally got what I wanted.
The only problem was that I was beginning to suspect getting both sisters would be much harder than winning them.
