Part 20

I used to think the hardest part would be getting both sisters to fall for me.

Turns out, the hardest part was figuring out what happened after they agreed to give me a chance.

A few days after our conversation, my girlfriend invited me over. Her sister was there too, and for once, neither looked like she was preparing to fight me or each other. Things were still awkward, but at least nobody was pretending the situation didn't exist.

We decided to go out for dinner. My girlfriend wanted Italian, while her sister preferred burgers. I suggested we flip a coin, which earned me two identical looks of disappointment.

“Can't you make one decision yourself?” my girlfriend asked.

“I'm trying to be fair.”

“You're trying to avoid responsibility,” her sister corrected.

Honestly, I was impressed they were already agreeing on things.

My girlfriend finally chose the Italian restaurant, and we headed out. During dinner, her sister brought up the family gathering where I'd first met her. My girlfriend immediately reminded her that I'd been trying very hard to impress everyone that evening.

“I was trying to impress you,” I told my girlfriend.

“And yet you fell for my sister.”

There was no good answer to that. I settled for taking a sip of water and hoping the subject would disappear.

Her sister laughed, and eventually my girlfriend did too. It wasn't that everything was suddenly fine. They were still adjusting, and I could tell there were things they'd need to discuss privately. But neither was treating the other like an enemy anymore.

For once, I wasn't trying to arrange who got my attention or hide how I felt. They both knew the truth, and they were choosing to see whether this could work on their own terms.

I had to admit, it was a strange feeling. I'd spent weeks trying to control the situation, only to discover that the only way forward was to stop controlling every little thing.

After dinner, we walked outside together. My girlfriend took my hand, and her sister slipped her arm through mine.

I looked at them, unable to stop smiling.

“Don't get too comfortable,” my girlfriend warned. “We're still figuring this out.”

“Wouldn't dream of it.”

Her sister raised an eyebrow. “You're smiling like you've already won.”

“Maybe I have.”

They exchanged a look, then laughed. I couldn't tell whether they were amused by my confidence or planning to make me regret it later.

Honestly, either possibility sounded about right.

I'd wanted both sisters from the moment I realized I'd fallen for the wrong one. I'd lied, manipulated situations, and nearly ruined everything trying to get what I wanted.

Yet here I was, walking between them, with a chance neither of them had been forced to give me.

I wasn't going to pretend I'd suddenly become a better person. I was still June, and I still wanted both of them.

The difference was that now they knew exactly who they were choosing.

And for once, I didn't have to hide a thing.

For a while, everything was going well. Maybe a little too well.

I had both sisters, and for once, my life felt almost perfect.

Then my childhood friend joined our class, bringing back memories I hadn't thought about in years.

And just when I thought things couldn't get any more complicated, my ex joined too.

That evening, a message from her appeared on my phone.

Miss me, June?

I read it once, then again.

I had a feeling my peaceful days were over.
