Part 6
I stared at the message for a few seconds.
Then I showed it to my friend.
He read it.
Looked at me.
Then looked back at the phone.
"Well..."
"What?"
"Looks like Plan B got promoted."
I laughed.
"Exactly."
But honestly, I wasn't worried.
If anything, this made things more interesting.
The boyfriend had finally realized I existed.
That meant he was paying attention.
And if he was paying attention to me, he was probably going to start paying even more attention to her.
Which meant more arguments.
More pressure.
More chances for me.
Still, I couldn't be careless.
I didn't reply to the message.
My friend looked at me.
"You're not going to answer?"
"No."
"Why?"
"Because I don't know who sent it."
He thought about it.
"Fair."
Then I smiled.
"But I have a pretty good idea."
The next day at university, I saw her walking toward me.
She smiled the second she noticed me.
I smiled back.
Everything looked normal.
Until she reached me.
"Hey."
"Hey."
She looked at me for a moment.
"Did you get a weird message yesterday?"
I froze for half a second.
Interesting.
"Why?"
She looked away.
"He asked me if I've been talking to you a lot."
I almost laughed.
So it was him.
I kept my face serious.
"What did you tell him?"
"The truth."
I raised an eyebrow.
"What truth?"
"That you're my friend."
Friend.
That word hurt a little.
Not because I cared.
Obviously.
I just preferred titles with more potential.
I nodded.
"That's fine."
She looked at me.
"He's getting really jealous."
I shrugged.
"Maybe he's worried."
"Worried about what?"
I looked at her.
"That you're getting tired of him."
She went silent.
I knew immediately I'd hit the right spot.
She looked down.
"Maybe I am."
There it was again.
That sentence.
I could practically hear Plan B laughing in the background.
But I didn't push her.
Not yet.
I just said, "Whatever you decide, make sure you're doing it because you want to."
She looked at me.
"You always say things like that."
"Like what?"
"Things that make me think."
I smiled.
"Maybe I'm just smart."
She laughed.
"You're definitely full of yourself."
"Also true."
She smiled again.
Then her phone rang.
She looked at the screen.
Her expression changed.
"It's him."
She answered.
I couldn't hear what he was saying, but I could see her getting more annoyed with every second.
"Why are you asking me that?"
Pause.
"No, I'm not hiding anything."
Another pause.
Then she suddenly said,
"If you don't trust me, what's the point?"
She hung up.
Silence.
I waited.
She looked at me.
"I can't do this anymore."
I didn't say anything.
She continued.
"Every time I talk to someone, he thinks something is going on. Every time I make plans, he gets angry. I'm exhausted."
I nodded slowly.
"You should talk to him."
She looked at me.
"I have."
"Then talk again."
She stared at me for a moment.
"You really want me to fix things with him?"
That caught me off guard.
I could've told her exactly what I wanted.
But that would've been stupid.
So I smiled.
"I want you to do whatever makes you happy."
Technically, that wasn't a lie.
I just happened to know exactly what would make me happy.
She smiled faintly.
"Thank you."
Then she walked away.
I watched her leave.
My phone buzzed.
A message from my friend.
"How's the mission?"
I typed back.
"Still alive."
Then another message appeared.
"What's the next move?"
I looked at the message from her boyfriend still sitting on my phone.
I smiled.
"I think he's about to make the next move for us."
And I was right.
That evening, she called me.
Her voice sounded different.
"June?"
"Yeah?"
"Can you meet me?"
I sat up.
"Sure. What happened?"
She was quiet for a second.
Then she said,
"I broke up with him."
I smiled.
Finally.
After weeks of planning, stalking, waiting, and pretending to be the perfect guy...
the biggest obstacle was gone.
Or at least, that's what I thought.
Because then she said something I wasn't expecting.
"I need to tell you something."
And suddenly, I wasn't smiling anymore.
