How i met her (Part 9)

I decided the best thing I could do was get my girlfriend away from her sister before things got even worse.

“Can we talk somewhere else?” I asked.

She didn't answer immediately, but eventually nodded. We walked a little away from the café while her sister stayed behind.

The moment we were alone, she said, “So you're really going to keep lying to me?”

“I’m not lying.”

She gave me a look. “You literally just told me you don't like my sister.”

“Because I don't.”

That was probably the worst lie I had ever told.

She crossed her arms. “Then why are you always around her?”

“She needed someone after her breakup. I was there. That's it.”

“And you expect me to believe that?”

“Yes.”

She sighed. “June, I’m not stupid.”

“I never said you were.”

“Then stop treating me like I am.”

For once, I didn't have an immediate answer. If I admitted anything, I would lose her. If I kept denying it, I needed to make the lie believable.

So I changed the subject.

“Are you really going to throw our relationship away because you think something might be happening?”

She stayed quiet.

I knew I had finally found something I could work with.

“We've been together this whole time,” I continued. “You know me better than anyone. If I wanted to leave, I would've told you.”

She looked at me for a moment.

“Would you?”

That question caught me off guard.

“Would you actually tell me if you liked someone else?”

I smiled slightly. “Of course.”

Another lie.

She didn't look convinced, but at least she wasn't walking away anymore.

Then her phone started ringing.

Her sister was calling.

She answered, listened for a few seconds, and then said, “Yeah, I'm coming.”

She hung up and told me her sister wanted to talk to her.

I nodded. “Go.”

She started walking away, then stopped.

“June.”

“Yeah?”

“If I find out you lied to me…”

She didn't finish the sentence.

She didn't need to.

I waited until she left, then finally took out my phone and called my friend.

He answered immediately.

“So?”

I sighed. “I'm still alive.”

“That's not what I asked.”

“My girlfriend suspects everything, her sister likes me, and somehow I'm still dating the first one.”

There was a short silence.

Then he laughed.

“Bro, you are completely screwed.”

“I know.”

“So what's next?”

I smiled.

“Now I actually have to think.”
