Massive 7.8 Magnitude Earthquake Strikes Southern Philippines: 15 Dead, Hundreds Injured, and Condolences

MINDANAO — On Monday morning, June 8, 2026, a devastating tectonic earthquake with a magnitude (M) of 7.7 to 7.8 struck off the coast of Mindanao Island in the southern Philippines. This massive natural disaster caused severe structural damage and triggered tsunami warnings from the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center for the coastal areas of the Philippines, Indonesia, Palau, Taiwan, and Papua New Guinea.

The strongest tremors were felt in General Santos, a city of about 720,000 residents. Ground reports and amateur citizen footage showed fatal destruction, with a shopping center housing a Jollibee fast-food restaurant reduced to rubble. A school building was also reported to have completely collapsed in another location, though fortunately, it was unoccupied at the time. In response to this massive damage, relevant authorities have closed the General Santos Airport until further notice.

As of this report, the number of casualties continues to rise tragically. The latest reports confirm at least 15 people have died and over a hundred others are injured. Regional Civil Defense Director Rodrigo Sosmena stated that 12 fatalities and 129 injuries were recorded in the Soccsksargen region. Meanwhile, 3 other deaths were reported in Davao Occidental province, with some dying after being crushed by collapsing walls in the town of Alabel. Police Major Roland Catoburan and Chief Sergeant Robert Dagon confirmed that the police are currently occupied with intensive rescue operations.

Following a series of strong aftershocks, the Philippine President has ordered the suspension of all school activities in Mindanao and called for the immediate evacuation of coastal residents.

"Move to higher ground now. Do not wait. Your life is more important than anything left behind," the President firmly stated in his directive.

This instruction was immediately executed across various locations. In the coastal town of Kiamba, Regional Disaster Management Head Agripino Dacera reported that around 50,000 residents, or 80 percent of its total population, have been successfully evacuated to rescue centers on higher ground.

In response to this heartbreaking natural tragedy, the entire editorial board and media team of JAVA POST express their deepest condolences. Humanity is a universal value that stands above all else, and this disaster is a shared sorrow.

"We are deeply saddened to hear the news of the devastating earthquake that ravaged the southern Philippines this morning.
