Back in ancient Egypt, these majestic fish were thought to help the deceased take their place in the Sun Boat along with the god Ra, easing their journey to the afterlife. You can find evidence of this in some Egyptian tomb walls and even in the Ancient Book of the Dead.
Nowadays, we praise tilapia for it's mild flavour, which helps it blend properly with many dishes, and its low mercury content (assuming its been bred properly) which is great for pregnant and breastfeeding women, as it has less chemicals that could contaminate the milk.
We have been breeding this majestic fish since ancient times: As we learned before, its appeareance in human culture dates as back as Ancient Egypt. Today, most of the international tilapia exports come from China, but it is bred all around the world, both in seawater and saltwater. It is cheap, easy to breed, and helps control duckweed and other water pests.
