Zurich, Switzerland – What began in 1941 as an annoying walk with burrs clinging to his dog's fur turned into one of the 20th century's most practical inventions. Swiss engineer George de Mestral examined the stubborn burrs under a microscope and discovered tiny hooks that caught onto loops of fabric and fur.

After years of development, he patented the invention in 1955, naming it "Velcro" — a blend of the French words velours (velvet) and crochet (hook).

Today, hook-and-loop fasteners are everywhere — from shoes and clothing to spacecraft and countless everyday items — a prime example of how observing nature can lead to groundbreaking innovation.
