"Never hire workers before level 18" is wrong. Here are my numbers.

ManasAugust 29, 2026economy

Every new player hears the same advice in chat: don't hire workers until you're level 18, you'll
just bleed money on wages.
I'm level 15, my account is 10 days old (citizen since Aug 19), I run
3 companies with 8 hired workers, and the factories are net positive today. Not "will be
positive once I level up" — positive now, with wages fully paid.

This isn't a theory post. Screenshots below, numbers unedited.

The headline

Companies3 (all Coca, Central Africa · Ouham)
Hired workers8 (2 + 3 + 3)
Total production8,307 units/day
Daily revenue$668.21Daily costs (wages + inputs)$614.96
Daily profit+$53.25

Per company: +$16.00 (2 workers, 2,283 u/day), +$18.72 (3 workers, 2,440 u/day),
+$18.53 (3 workers, 3,584 u/day).
Every single company is in the green.

Yes, the margin is thin — about 8% of revenue. That's the honest part of this post and I'll come
back to it. But "thin positive margin on $668/day of throughput" is a completely different
situation from "bleeding money", which is what the level-18 rule assumes.

Why the level-18 rule exists (and why it's incomplete)

The rule comes from a real failure mode: a new player at a 0–10% production bonus hires a worker,
pays them per Production Point, and sells output at market. At a low bonus the worker's wage per
PP is roughly equal to the profit per PP, so every work they do is break-even at best. Add a bad
region, a fresh worker with no fidelity, and one missed wage payment, and you lose money. Level 18
is a proxy for "by now you have enough skill points and cash that the mistake won't hurt".

But the rule is about margin per PP, not about level. What actually decides whether a worker
makes or loses you money is:

worker margin per work = profit per PP × production bonus multiplier − wage per PP

Level doesn't appear in that formula. The production bonus does. So the real question is: can a
low-level player get a high enough bonus that the multiplier carries the wage? Yes.

The meta: chase the bonus, not the level

My three companies sit at a +70% production bonus right now. Zero of it comes from my level:

  • +40% deposit bonus — the region (Ouham, Central Africa) has an active Coca deposit.

  • +30% ethic deposit bonus — the ruling party there has industrialism −2, which adds an
extra 30% on top of any open deposit in that country.

  • Strategic / specialisation bonus: 0. I don't need it.

Every worker's 25-ish PP per work becomes ~42 PP in my production pool. That 1.7× multiplier is
what turns a break-even hire into a paying one. At a 0–25% bonus the same worker at the same wage
would be a wash or a loss — and that's the situation the "wait until 18" crowd is describing.

How to find this yourself:

  1. Open the world map and look for regions with an active deposit for a raw item (coca, grain,
livestock, fish). Deposits are transient — windows of a few days — so check the end date.

  2. Check the ruling party's ethics for that country. Industrialism −1 gives +10% extra on
deposits, −2 gives +30% extra. (Industrialism +2 kills deposits entirely — avoid.)

  3. Put a raw-item company there. Raw items cost 1 PP per unit, no inputs, so your costs are
    basically wages.

Moving a company costs 5 concrete. That's cheap insurance against a deposit expiring.

My skill point build (60 points spent)

Every point is in the economy tree. Nothing in fight skills.

Entrepreneurship — Level 55
Self-work in my own companies: 13 works/day × 25 PP = 325 PP/day of free production.

Energy — Level 90
Work at my employer for wage income. This funds the wage bill on bad days.

Production — Level 25
PP per work, multiplying both self-work and job income.

Companies Limit — Level 5
Lets me own 3 companies now (cap is 5).

Management — Level 8
Worker cap and daily hire limit. This is the one everyone skips.

Management is the skill that makes the strategy possible. At Management 8, I can hold 8 workers across my companies. Without it, you can't run the volume that makes the thin margin add up.

I reset my skills this morning to get here. If you're deep in attack/precision at level 12, a reset is cheaper than waiting six levels.

What the daily loop looks like

  • Log in ~2 times a day (bars cap after 10 h, so more than that is wasted).

  • Spend energy at my employer (wage income, roughly covers a bad wage day).

  • Spend entrepreneurship on self-works (+325 PP/day, no wage attached).

  • Produce, sell coca on the market, pay wages from the sale.

  • Watch the deposit expiry. When it goes, move (5 concrete) or the maths breaks.

The honest caveats

  • 8% margin is thin. $53/day on $615 of costs means a 10% price drop in coca wipes the profit.
I'm treating this as a volume play, not a fat one: the goal is to stack company value and engine
upgrades while the deposit is open.

  • Deposits expire. This is a window, not a permanent state. The whole point is to be ready to
    relocate.

  • Wages are the real risk. Miss a payment and workers leave, and fidelity resets. Keep a cash
buffer of at least one day of wages (~$600 for me at 8 workers — I'm currently under that, which
is the one thing I'd do differently).

  • Fresh workers are worse than tenured ones. Fidelity grows with days worked. Don't fire and
rehire to "optimise" — I did that once on bad advice and it cost me a week of fidelity. Decide
    once, then hold.

  • The game flags all three companies with "Problematic Worker" — that's a worker who hasn't
worked recently, not a loss. Check your work counts before reacting.

Bottom line

The level-18 rule protects you from a real mistake, but it protects you by telling you not to
play. The actual rule is: hire workers when the production bonus makes the margin per PP
positive, and put skill points into Management so you can run enough of them for it to matter.
I did that at level 14–15 with a 10-day-old account and I'm net positive with 8 workers.

Find a deposit, check the party ethics, spec Management, and go.
