On the topic of gold!

There are two main types of gold deposits found in the world: alluvial gold and gold ore.

Alluvial Gold

Alluvial gold forms when gold-bearing mountains are slowly eroded by wind and water. Over time, small particles of gold are washed down into rivers. Because gold is very dense and heavy, it settles in the sediment at the bottom of rivers, especially near the base of mountains.

Alluvial gold can also be found in ancient riverbeds that were buried by layers of sediment over thousands or even millions of years. These old river channels may no longer carry water, but they can still contain rich gold deposits.

Gold Ore (Primary Deposits)

Gold can also be found in solid rock, usually in regions with ancient volcanic or magmatic activity. In these areas, gold originates deep underground.

Hot geothermal waters circulate through cracks in the Earth's crust, carrying dissolved minerals, including gold and silica. As the water cools, the silica crystallizes into quartz. The gold becomes trapped inside these quartz veins.

Today, most of the gold mined around the world comes from these hard rock (primary) deposits.

The Cosmic Origin of Gold

Gold itself was formed in extreme cosmic events, such as supernova explosions or neutron star collisions. These events created the heavy elements that later became part of planets.

When Earth was forming, most of its original gold sank toward the core because gold is very dense. However, later in Earth’s history, during a period known as the Late Heavy Bombardment, the planet was struck by many asteroids and comets. These impacts delivered additional gold to the Earth’s crust.

This crustal gold was later moved and concentrated by geothermal activity and magma, eventually forming the deposits we mine today.
