Welcome, to the article commemorating the 51st anniversary of the end of the resistance war against America, the liberation of South Vietnam and the reunification of Vietnam! At exactly 11:30 AM on this day, 51 years ago, the historic moment when the revolutionary flag flies atop the Independence Palace, the Vietnamese people joining hands in the great circle, again....

A brief look back to the historic day

10:45 AM - 30 April, 1975

On 10:45 AM, columns of armored tanks thundered down Thống Nhất Avenue, drawing the eyes of every civilians gathered outside the palace gates. Moments later, the palace gates were smashed open as tanks pushed through the entrance.

Lieutenant Bùi Quang Thận (carrying the flag), along with two soldiers and a student activist, managed to go inside the Palace, plant the flag of the Liberation Army on top of the roof.

1:30 PM

The President of South Vietnam Dương Văn Minh and his prime minister were escorted by Liberation Army soldiers to Saigon Radio to record a surrender announcement.

At the radio station, a Liberation Army officer hastily drafted Dương Văn Minh's surrender statement. Since there was no available recording equipment, German journalist Borries Gallasch, who were accidentally captured by the army, lent them his radio to record president's statement. University student Thái, who had previously planted the flag on the Palace, spoke first.

(General Dương Văn Minh, wearing a black jacket and glasses. Gallasch is sitting next to him, while Thái is standing, holding a stack of papers).

"... Normal life has returned to Saigon. The city that Uncle Hồ Chí Minh had longed for, is now liberated... We would like to introduce the statement of the president, regarding the surrender of this city ..."

- Nguyễn Hữu Thái, from the Radio Saigon

At the same time, the Voice of Vietnam radio in Hanoi, North Vietnam, also had its broadcast:

"This is the Voice of Vietnam, broadcasting from Hanoi, the capital of the Democratic Republic of Vietnam...
... The Ho Chi Minh Campaign was a complete victory. The city of Saigon, named after the great President Hồ Chí Minh, has been completely liberated…”

- Hồ Mỹ Hạnh, from the VOV radio.

Afternoon

On the afternoon of April 30, 1975, most people in Saigon (fun fact: there were also my grandparents) poured into the streets to enjoy the joyful and exhilarating atmosphere of the city's liberation.

Upon hearing the news on the radio, hundreds of thousands of young people in the capital Hanoi also poured into the streets, cheering and marching to celebrate the great victory of the nation.

(Red banner translated: "There are nothing more precious than independence and freedom")

Some afterwords

The event marked the end of a conflict that had lasted for decades and profoundly shaped both Vietnam and international politics.

This work was created as a preservation for the historic moment of Vietnam, the moment when people from two sides of Vietnam stop killing each other, peace started to return to the place.

This isn't a hate speech towards anyone, nor a glorification of any violent action. I just want to share our history to the world! I'm willing to take down any elements in this article that you find breaking the rule, so pls no hate :((
