Paned II - A Quiet Weight

The map had begun to lean.

One foreign colour still sat heavily across part of the island. Now it was reaching north, feeling for purchase beneath ground held by a friend.

Elsewhere, the numbers were becoming unreasonable.

Damage accumulated faster than the page could comfortably contain it. Not fire exactly, though it behaved like fire—many small hands feeding the same heat until the balance began to soften.

I watched without announcement.

There had been a time when I needed the Economy and War Guide open beside me. Its tables had once seemed structural, as though the world itself rested upon them. Now the writing looked thinner each time I returned.

The machinery had moved beyond its diagrams.

Perhaps every guide eventually becomes a record of the machine it failed to preserve.

I kept it nearby anyway.

Old instruments remain useful after they stop being accurate. A worn gauge may no longer tell you the pressure, but it can still show that something is changing.

And something was changing.

Across quieter ground, resistance gathered in fractions. A little strength placed here. A weakened seam tended there. Nothing heroic enough to become a headline—only the patient work of making occupation expensive.

My name appeared among it more often now.

I had not intended to become large. I had merely continued: watching, supplying, striking when the mechanism exposed itself. Over time, persistence acquired weight.

Now, when I leaned upon one side of the map, the needle noticed.

Not command. Not control.

Just consequence.

The northern colour trembled. The occupied ground below continued to take damage. Old instructions faded while new habits passed quietly between those still present.

Perhaps that is how a partisan grows: not by stepping forward, but by refusing to disappear.

The map leaned a little further.

My tea had gone cold.

I drank it anyway. Partisans should know better than to waste supplies.
