I am reaching out on behalf of myself, as a Brazilian citizen, to address the possibility of extending the presidential election voting period by an additional two hours.
Even though there are no major issues currently affecting the election, I believe this would be a beneficial measure, not only under the present circumstances but also as a precedent for future situations. For instance, should an unexpected server downtime or emergency maintenance occur during an election, having the possibility of extending the voting period would help ensure that all citizens have a fair opportunity to participate.
Such an extension would provide no unfair advantage to any candidate or political group. From a statistical standpoint, most citizens who intend to vote have likely already cast their ballots. Therefore, this is not about changing the electoral outcome, but about addressing a matter of fairness and equal opportunity.
Ultimately, this is a pragmatic discussion about isonomy: ensuring that every citizen has a reasonable and equal opportunity to exercise their right to vote, regardless of unforeseen circumstances.
