There are some big changes coming up in the next patch. While the details are still up in the air, it's safe to say that movement - and its costs - will be implemented in one way or another. Thus, after the patch you will most likely need oil to move around to fight in wars around the globe. And rumor has it that there will also be some crates to collect here and there, as long as you can reach them.
So in short, you're going to need some oil. Now, normally you'd head to the market and be on your merry way. However, everyone else will also be playing on the same patch, so it may well be the market is crowded with requests for oil. Add to this the upcoming buildings related to movement, i.e. airports and railways, which also need oil to build and/or upkeep, and you are starting to get the picture.
Demand for oil will rise to a whole new level!
Paper is currently the most valuable 2 production point good (~0.181). When it was first introduced, it was priced around 1.0 for a short while as everyone needed it and the production hadn't yet been established. Oil is already close to paper's price as is (~0.176) and as discussed, it's demand will soon shoot up. Do you want to be buying it for 1 coin a piece?
Unlike with paper, now you have a chance to prepare!
Whether you're going to use it yourself, or sell it for profit, now's your chance. Currently petroleum is affordable at (~0.087) so producing oil is already worthwhile. And as time goes on, first the interest, and then the demand will inevitably rise. By producing oil now, you'll at worst be self-sufficient and well prepared to ride the market fluctuations, and at best making a fortune by having a stock of oil for the patch day.
