"Quick" tutorial to combat system - part 3: Skills (Can I do damage, how?)

RottaApril 5, 2026guide

The Norwegian Rats quick and easy guide to combat mechanics for new players, part 3:

The how - to do damage

The scenario: You've found a fight you want to join, that still has enough time left for it to matter, (See https://app.warera.io/article/69d17569c8d8c0299b8f0551) and you know how to fight for your side. (See https://app.warera.io/article/69d125d30314b2dfe8ab0027)

Now you want to do some damage with your shiny new green gear and sharpened knife, but the skills are hard to understand.

Please read through these first:

Step 1:

Figure out if you want to do a lot of damage a few times,
or less damage a lot of times.

For this, we're going to look at our base damage skills first, with their starting values.

Putting skill points into these skills determines how much damage you do pr. hit.

Attack:

This skill adds 25 base damage along with your weapon to your attacks pr. level. Every new players start dealing 100 damage pr. hit without equipment or other bonuses.

Precision:

This skill adds 5% to your chance to hit pr. level. There's no point in doing a lot of damage if you miss all of your shots.
Every new player start with a 50% chance to hit their shots without equipment or other bonuses.
To paraphrase Wayne Gretzky:

You miss 100% of the shots you don't take.

Critical strike chance:

This skill adds 5% to your chance to do extra damage pr. level.
Every new player start with a 10% chance to get a lucky hit without equipment or other bonuses.

Critical strike damage bonus:

This skill adds 20% extra damage to your shots when ( if ) you get a critical strike.
Every new player start with 100% bonus damage when a critical hit hits, without equipment or other bonuses.

Some players go hard into critical hits, trying to get lucky and triple their damage every now and then, while others prefer to know that they hit almost every time and do a set amount of damage.

Next up: How to attack lots of times!

Your armour and dodge skills will help you hit multiple times in a row, and is one of the reasons you see high level players shoot 30-40-50+ times in just a couple of seconds.

Putting skill points into these skills determines how much many times you can attack based on your total health.

For these to make sense, we first have to understand that every time you attack, you also take damage. (See next step: Live, Loot, Eat!)
A new player will take 10 damage pr. hit before equipment or other bonuses.
The bonus for this are calculated by some simple math:

  • Damage Reduction % = total / (total + 40)

  • Dodge % = total / (total + 40)

In this case, "total" means combined stats from skills and equipment.

Armor:

This skills adds 6 points of armor pr. level.
Every new player start naked with 0 armor points without equipment or other bonuses.

These points can be translated to a percentage in damage reduction.

Example: https://app.warera.io/user/6813b758efecdf9bab195068 has 24 points of armour, following the simple math formula, we learn that he receives 37,5% less damage.

  • Damage Reduction % =
    24 / (24 + 40)
    = 0.375

Instead of losing 10 health for each attack, he loses 6.25 health before adding in equipment or other bonuses.

Dodge:

This skill adds 4 points of dodge chance pr. level.
Every new player start with 0 dodging capability without equipment or other bonuses.

Just like Armor these skill points can be translated to a percentage of dodge chance.

Example: https://app.warera.io/user/6945a7b06906cbac108e8e45 has 16 points of dodge, meaning that he has a 28,6% chance to not take damage or wear down his equipment when he attacks.
If he attacks and dodges, he loses 0 health.

Little known fact: Certain species of vampires uses farts to evade attacks and predators, similar to how some species of squids use ink to escape.

Lastly: Live, Loot, Eat!

Last up we your Health, Loot chance and Hunger.

Health:

This skill gives you additional 10 points of health pr. level.
Every new player starts with a base of 100 health without any bonuses or equipment.

Every full hour, you regain 10% of you max health.

In base values for new players, every attack will ,as mentioned in the Armor section, cost you 10 health.

This effectively means that a new player with 0 skills, fighting without equipment can hit 10 times.

Loot chance:

This skills gives players a 2% chance to loot pr. attack pr. skill level.
Every new player starts with a 5% loot chance without any bonuses or equipment.

It does not mean that you are guaranteed to get 5 crates for every 100 attacks you do. Each attack is calculated separately.

Hunger:

This skill gives you an additional point of hunger pr. skill level.
Every new player starts with a base of 4 hunger without any bonuses or equipment.

Just like the Health skill, you regain 10% of your max hunger every full hour.

This skill helps you regain health by eating food, each food item eaten costs 1 hunger.

Bread: Refills 10% of your max health.

Steak: Refills 15% of your max health.

Cooked fish: Refills 20% of your max health.

Step 2:

Realise that this is a lot of work, and who has time for that?

This is about the part where most players have realised that there are certain tools created to help you make an ok attack build without too much work.

https://warera-battle-simulator.netlify.app/ This tool helps you click around and see what different builds can get you.
Ask your village elder for tips on which tools to use, there are many of them and some might get outdated due to WarEra updates.

Have fun fighting!
