RabahSeptember 4, 2026politics

Sifar:

In an exclusive interview, former Algerian President Sifar addressed a number of political and regional issues, including the recent events between Algeria and Tunisia, his decision to step away from political life, the Algerian presidential elections, and the future of relations between Algeria and Morocco.

Recent events between Algeria and Tunisia

Asked about his view of the recent events between Algeria and Tunisia, Sifar chose not to comment directly, instead referring to an Algerian saying:

“I prefer not to comment on these events, but there is an Algerian saying: ‘The goat said to the wolf: My father’s enemy can never be a friend.’”

Was the war with Tunisia behind his departure from power?

Regarding whether he was removed from office, resigned, or whether the war with Tunisia was the reason behind his departure, Sifar denied that the war was the cause of his decision.

“No. I decided not to run for office again because of some internal problems.”

Regarding the war with Tunisia, he added:

“As for the war with Tunisia, we knew about it, and there was coordination with the Olive Alliance, of course.”

His view of the Algerian presidential elections

Asked about the Algerian presidential elections, Sifar said he could not comment on them because he did not know the winner well enough to take a position.

“Since I don't know the winner well enough, I can't comment on it, either by supporting or criticizing it. But the coming days will be decisive, so that we can know whether these elections were good or not.”

The biggest challenges during his term

When asked about the greatest difficulties he faced during his time in office, Sifar preferred to describe the situation as a “struggle over the seat of power.”

He stressed the importance of unity and a strong internal front, saying:

“I prefer to call it a struggle over the seat of power. At this time, everyone should stand together and the internal front must be strong in order to recover the territories. That is why I decided to step away from politics temporarily until the situation inside the country calms down.”

How does he view Algeria’s relationship with Morocco?

Speaking about Algeria’s relationship with Morocco, Sifar described Morocco as a “brotherly neighbor”, arguing that the relationship between the two countries dates back further than many might expect.

“Well, Algeria has relations with its brotherly neighbor Morocco that are older than everyone expects. The relationship began more than six months before the existence of the current Moroccan community, and there has been a great deal of military cooperation that still exists. Our relations with Morocco are and will remain good, and I consider Morocco an ally of Algeria.”

Looking toward the future, he added:

“I have a future vision that there will be more cooperation in various fields.”

A final message... a story with a deeper meaning

At the end of the interview, Sifar chose to deliver his final message through a story. He stressed that the story was not literally about his father and his family, before concluding: “Those who understand, understand.”

Here is the story as told by Sifar:

“We have a house in the high Aurès Mountains. Locusts came and started destroying the land. So my brothers, my father and I decided to go and get rid of them. My mother prepared the food, and we went to a cave to spend the night, planning to get rid of them the next day.

But my younger brother was very greedy. He went to them because he wanted to take all the glory for himself, but he couldn't do it, so he ran away, and we were left trapped there.

So we started killing the locusts by force until we got rid of them.

When we returned home, we had a feast among ourselves. Then that younger brother came asking for forgiveness.

My father threw him out and disowned him, telling him: ‘I don't know you, and you don't know me.’

Then the neighbors came because they wanted to understand what had happened. Those who had fled at the critical moment came back, and when they wanted to understand what had happened and wanted to enter our house to find out what had happened, we closed the door on them.

My younger brother stood with our neighbors, and from that day on, we never met them again.

But I am not talking about my father and my family here. Those who understand, understand.

Glory and eternity to our righteous martyrs.”
