Ōjin Tennō

(Emperor Ojin)

After Empress Jingu's death, her leadership was continued by her son, Emperor Ojin.

•Ōjin Tennō, also known as Emperor Ōjin or Homuda, is recognized as the first historically verifiable emperor of Japan, reigning from 270 to 310 AD.

His reign is important because it marks the transition from mythological accounts of Japanese emperors to historical accounts, particularly those documented in the ancient texts "Kojiki" and "Nihon shoki."

•Although these texts blend history and legend, most scholars agree that Ōjin was a real figure who ruled the Yamato region, the cradle of early Japanese civilization located in present-day Nara, Osaka, and Kobe.During his administration, he focused on consolidating power, improving domestic infrastructure, and encouraging economic development by organizing local unions and improving agriculture.

•Emperor Ōjin was also involved in foreign relations, particularly with the Korean kingdoms, where he sought to expand Japanese influence. His contributions included the introduction of writing from Korea,an important development for Japanese literacy and culture.

•Emperor Ōjin's legacy survives through the impressive burial mounds from his time, collectively known as the Kofun period, and he was later deified as a god of war, highlighting the paradox of his reign as both a leader of domestic reform and a figure of military significance.

•Ōjin Tennō (reigned late fourth to early fifth century CE; traditionally 201–310 CE), emperor of Japan, reigned 390–430 CE, traditionally 270–310 CE. Nintoku (375–427 CE; traditionally 290–399 CE), favorite son and successor of Ōjin, traditionally reigned 313–399 CE. Kaminaga Hime (active late fourth to early fifth century CE), a woman beloved by Ōjin but later married to Nintoku. Yehime (active late fourth to early fifth century CE), a favorite concubine courted by Ōjin. Wani (active late fourth to early fifth century CE), a Korean scribe who introduced writing to Japan.
