The Meaning of the Name NIPPON
Japan was originally known as Wa (倭) or Wakoku (倭國) when the country was inhabited by Yayoi people who live in the Kyushu and Kanto regions of Honshu. 倭 can be translated as "dwarf" or "obedient." It was later changed by Japanese writers who found it offensive, to the character Wa with its homophone 和 ("peace, harmony"). Wa 和 often combined with 大 ("great") to create the name 大和, which is read as Yamato which was the original name of Japan at that time.
In the Heian period, 大和 was gradually replaced by 日本 which was pronounced with the Chinese reading Nippon and later as Nifon and in modern usage, Nihon, which literally means"origin of the sun", and is often translated as the Land of the Rising Sun. This originates from imperial correspondence with China's Sui Dynasty and refers to Japan being located east of China.
