The Architect of War Era: Vatou

WarEra is more than a map and a set of mechanics, it is a living system shaped by design choices made long before players ever logged in. In this interview, WarEra’s lead developer, explains how the game was built, why certain paths were chosen, and where it is heading next.

Thank you for joining us. Could you introduce yourself to the WarEra community and tell us how the idea for WarEra originally came to life?

Hi, I’m https://app.warera.io/user/6813b758efecdf9bab195068

The idea for WarEra came about 10 years ago, when I saw how games like e-sim could be fun, but were held back by terrible decisions and very bad UI/UX. I decided to learn how to code specifically for this project.

WarEra is often praised for avoiding pay-to-win mechanics. Was this a core design philosophy from the beginning, and how difficult is it to maintain?

At first, I was open to a small amount of limited pay-to-win. But after discussing it with early testers and https://app.warera.io/user/6813b751efecdf9bab194ab5, they convinced me that even a little would hurt the game.

I decided to go with cosmetics and premium features instead. Obviously, it’s much harder to make money this way, but perhaps it’s easier to attract more players.

What are the main differences between WarEra and similar nation-based strategy games, from a developer’s perspective?

Most games in this genre feel very old, both technologically and in terms of interface.

I try to use the best and most modern technologies available for every aspect of WarEra, especially for the app.

Which part of WarEra’s design are you personally most proud of so far?

The interface and the map.

What is your favourite in-game moment so far?

When I muted znarch

Do you plan to expand the economy with systems such as economies of scale, vertical integration, shipping costs, or similar mechanics?

Yes, the economy will continue to improve. I still don’t know exactly how.

When can players expect updates to chat and newspapers?

I don’t know yet. A small newspaper update with dislikes is already live on the dev server.

Is there any plans to introduce political parties?

They are already on the dev server.

What have been the biggest technical or design challenges you’ve faced since launch?

Creating the map and scaling the servers.

I’ve learned a lot while making this game, and I actually enjoy that part.

The community is very active in politics, wars, and media. How important is player-driven content to your vision of WarEra?

The game is about community and player-driven content, so I’d say it’s very important.

What is your approach to handling balance issues, exploits, or unintended strategies when they emerge?

Ideas are usually presented and discussed in the Discord Council. We challenge them to minimize exploits and balance issues.

I couldn’t think of all of this alone. Council members also propose balancing ideas, like they did for the ‘development’ update.

How do you envision WarEra evolving over the next year? Are there any systems or features you’re especially excited to expand?

I want to make it a more complete and interesting game with fun mechanics.

I’d also like to take more inspiration from Paradox games.

What role do community feedback and criticism play in shaping future updates?

A very important role, especially through the Council.

I basically won’t release an update if the Council is strongly against it.

What aspects of the game do you prioritize most when deciding what to update?

It depends on immediate needs and what players seem to want the most.

As a Serbian player living in Cyprus, with a bit of bias: why is Kosovo a state and not a region of Serbia in WarEra, while Cyprus is not split?

Because France and many other countries recognize Kosovo as a state, and honestly, Serbs can just invade it, so it’s more of a bonus for them.

As for Cyprus, I probably implemented it quickly back when there were only about 30 players in the game, and never went back to change it.

What message would you like to send to both veteran players and newcomers who are just discovering WarEra?

Please subscribe. I need money to sustain hamster food.

Bonus Question: Can I get a special badge for interviewing you?

No.

We thank WarEra’s owner and lead developer for this refreshingly honest interview. From bold design choices to unapologetic humor, WarEra’s future clearly remains driven by community, experimentation, and ambition.
