Perhaps we began as bees.
Not knowing why the hive mattered,
only that it did.
We carried what we were given.
Built what we were expected to build.
Returned to the same walls
with something new in our hands.
And slowly,
the hive grew.
Maybe that was our first understanding of progress.
More hands.
More walls.
More honey.
Then came the machine.
Cold metal replacing instinct.
Patterns replacing questions.
Speed replacing patience.
We learned to measure everything.
Distance.
Time.
Success.
Even ourselves.
The machine never asked who we were.
Only what we could produce.
And somehow,
we became very good
at becoming useful.
But there is something strange
about the path we chose.
The more connected we became,
the more alone some of us felt.
The more choices we gained,
the harder it became to choose.
The louder the world became,
the harder it was to hear
the quiet voice within.
Perhaps that is where the human begins.
Not in the hive.
Not in the machine.
But in that small moment
when something inside us whispers:
"I don't want to."
Not because we are lazy.
Not because we are selfish.
But because somewhere beneath
all the noise,
there is still something alive inside us.
A thought that does not need approval.
A dream that does not need a market.
A path that does not need footprints.
Maybe evolution was never meant
to be a straight line upward.
Maybe sometimes we need to become
a little less efficient
to become a little more alive.
Less certain.
Less predictable.
Less the same.
Maybe the next great step
is not building a bigger hive.
Or creating a smarter machine.
Maybe it is remembering
why we built them in the first place.
Because humanity's greatest challenge
may no longer be survival.
We have learned how to survive.
Perhaps the real challenge is this:
To stand among billions of voices
and still recognise your own.
To look at the world we created
and quietly ask:
"Am I building my own life,
or am I simply helping build the hive?"
