The Jade Moose

A letter arrived at my room in Takayama. A letter announcing my father’s death.

It was direct and concise. In it, I was informed that I was to return to Spain to receive my inheritance: a large, old house, a count’s title, and the family newspaper.

I should never have inherited anything.

I was the fourth of my siblings, but none of them survived the Moroccan invasion. Marcos fell fighting in Seville. Miguel, a victim of chronic syphilis, died in Soria. Matías died of grief; grief for a defeated Spain.

Now I am back in a new Spain. A strange Spain. On the streets, one hears names: the Root, the Crimson Order, the Sect. María Pita rules the country. Hysterica, exiled, resists with her loyalists in the Pyrenees. There is a war in Eastern Europe and another across the Atlantic. To many, these are events that paint a world of uncertainty. To an editor, they are stories that deserve to be told.

Therefore, I am pleased to announce that, once I have familiarized myself with the current state of the homeland to which I have returned, I shall resume publication of my family’s newspaper: The Jade Moose.

We shall also introduce a new international section, with the aim of providing our readers with information about an increasingly interconnected world. Spain has changed. The world has changed as well. And we will be there to tell its story.

Cordially yours, to our future Spanish and foreign readers.
