The Legendary Last Stand of Danie Theron AKA The Original Captain James Bond

In the late nineteenth century, a conflict erupted across South Africa known as the Anglo-Boer War. The mighty British Empire brought hundreds of thousands of soldiers to crush two small Boer republics. Outnumbered and outgunned, the local fighters turned to guerrilla tactics, relying on stealthy scout units to outmaneuver the massive British war machine. At the absolute center of this resistance was one man named Danie Theron.

Long before Ian Fleming created the world's most famous fictional spy, Danie Theron was operating under a covert alias that sounds remarkably familiar. He slipped past enemy lines, gathered intelligence, and coordinated surprise strikes using the pseudonym Captain James Bond. This occurred more than fifty years before the first 007 novel ever hit shelves, making Theron the true original super spy.

Theron was a relentless nightmare for the British high command. Lord Roberts, the commander-in-chief of the British forces, publicly called Theron the single greatest thorn in the flesh of the British advance. Theron organized an elite scouting corps that rode bicycles and fast horses, slipping through enemy patrols and vanishing into the wilderness before heavy guns could ever target them.

On September 5, 1900, his luck finally ran out on a lonely ridge at Gatsrand. While scouting alone on a rocky hill, Theron spotted an advancing British column equipped with cavalry and heavy artillery. Realizing his nearby comrades were completely unaware of the approaching threat, Theron refused to save himself and retreat.

Taking cover among the boulders, he opened fire single-handedly with his Mauser rifle. He sprinted between rocks after every few shots to create the illusion that a whole unit held the ridge. For over two hours, a single man halted an entire company of the British Royal Armed Forces, drawing their full fury onto his position so his men could escape.

The British eventually carpeted the hilltop with heavy artillery, killing the master scout in the blast.

When soldiers finally climbed the hill, they were stunned to find only one body. Danie Theron died as he lived, an unyielding warrior whose courage earned the permanent respect of the empire he fought against.
