Imagine getting shot nine times and your first thought is to drop a joke.
That was Field Marshal Sam Manekshaw (Sam Bahadur) In World War II He took nine machine gun rounds to the stomach while fighting japanese army and was lying on a bloody field, barely holding on. When the surgeon finally got to him and asked what happened, Sam just smiled through the pain and said "A mule kicked me."
Nine bullets and he still had time to mess with the doctor.
That same humor stayed with him his whole life.
Years later, Prime Minister Indira Gandhi asked him point-blank if he was planning a military coup against her. Most generals would panic, but Sam just smiled and told her, "You have a long nose, Prime Minister. Mine is longer. I don't poke my nose into your business, so don't poke yours into mine."
Not really the reply most people would give to a Prime Minister, but Sam Manekshaw was just built different.
Later on, someone asked him what would've happened if he had moved to Pakistan during Partition in 1947. He didn't even hesitate:
"Pakistan would have won the 1971 war."
just pure confidence with no explanation
